Today in VHipHop News, with this week's achievement of her 20th Gold-certified record in the US, Jhené Aiko has entered the ranks of Beyoncé, Rihanna, and others.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified her 2020 single "Above and Beyond" off her third studio album Chilombo as Gold on Wednesday (January 25), indicating that the song has sold over 500,000 copies.
The news was a professional turning point for the six-time Grammy-nominated songbird, one that just a small number of Black female musicians have attained.
Jhené Aiko has earned a spot at the table with Beyoncé, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Doja Cat, and Mariah Carey thanks to her 20th Gold single.
Jhené shed some light on the procedure she used while writing music for films like "Above and Beyond" in an earlier interview with REVOLT. Jhené previously discussed the approach she used to write songs for Chilombo, such as "Above and Beyond," in an interview with REVOLT.
“When I’m going through something, it actually flows out easier for me. Doing ‘Triggered’ and several other songs… [gives me] that same feeling that I have to release [it],” Aiko explained. “It just flows out and I try not to overthink it until I want to [put] ad-libs in or background [vocals]. My new album I’m working on now is like that. Every song that you hear is me [freestyling].”
The top-charting album debuted at number one on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart and number two on the Billboard 200 list.
Since Beyoncé's Lemonade in 2016, Chilombo continues to be the largest album debut by a female R&B singer, selling over 1,057,000 copies.
Additionally, the album won the 2021 iHeartRadio Music Award for R&B Album of the Year and the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Album.
Jhené Aiko hasn't put out any new music since her third LP, but in 2021, streaming services throughout the world began to provide her 2011 indie debut mixtape Sailing Souls, which launched her to popularity.
