Things got a little heated in the past when female rap mogul Remy Ma discussed Doja’s penmanship in the music industry, claiming on the podcast Drink Champs that she doesn’t consider her to be a rapper.
As a online debate ensued at the time, as of late, during a recent interview with Black Compass media, one of the show's hosts made a joke about the Doja Cat "controversy", and the Terror Squad rapper made it quite clear how she felt on the matter.
When Remy mentioned wanting to introduce more female rappers into the battle rap realm, the host exclaimed, "Yo Remy, you trying to line up Doja Cat?" "Don't even bring her up," Remy said swiftly. "I thought I was giving [her] a compliment. Her whole entourage or fan base came for my life. I was like, ‘I thought I said something good!’”
In March, Remy Ma began the Twitter controversy when speaking with Drink Champs co-hosts N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN. Remy Ma chimed in as soon as N.O.R.E. referred to the "Say So" performer as a "rapper," saying, "I don't think she's a rapper." Let's be clear with that. They put her in the rapper category, I don’t think she’s a rapper. But she makes dope records, and I think she’s dope.”
Comments began to pour in, with some saying, "Y'all got to understand where Remy Ma is coming from." She grew up in a time when artists were rapping, not singing. Doja Cat’s music is more pop than rap, and that’s a fact”. While others expressed, “Remy Ma saying Doja Cat isn't a rapper just pissed me off. Bitch are YOU a rapper? What was the last song YOU released?”
Just weeks later, at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Doja Cat received a Grammy Award in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category for the song "Kiss Me More" starring SZA — not Best Rap Song, Best Melodic Rap Performance, or Best Rap Anything.
Doja Cat, on the other hand, has always claimed to be a rapper. "DONT EVER FUCKIN DISRESPECT ME AS A RAPPER," Doja tweeted in 2021, "AFTER THE LAST SONG I DROPPED YOU WILL RESPECT MY PEN AND THATS FUCKIN THAT." stream very Best."
Remy Ma seemed to be sick of the issue, while Doja Cat just stated that her next album will be "mainly" rap.
